Sailing Sec report December 2017

Much has happened since last report, the sacrifice to the wind gods worked there being only one days sailing having to be abandoned due to inclement weather and only one race in aggregate series needs to be re-sailed this will happen in 2018. The sailing committee has not had to revert to the roster much this year but if no volunteers are available we will ask next listed person on roster to help out if this does not happen sailing for Saturday will have to be abandoned to the detriment of all. Next on list is Howard followed by Gail Veal.

The sailing courses have been varied this year with triangular courses and windward leeward predominating also tried 90-degree triangular course and figure 8 course but not every sailor can be pleased with courses set but this will continue into second half of sailing season.

The club supports all those sailors attending national titles and wishes them all the best.

John Wallace who is travelling to Perth to sail in Sabre nationals

Brad Carver, Paul Linderman, Paul Campbell and Scott McDonald also Greg Caines  are going up to northern NSW to sail at Manning point on lake Macquarie for taipan nationals.

Jim Scott is going over to Adelaide to sail in 125 titles.

Matt Dawson is refurbishing the cobra to take up to Gosford to sail with his son who will be sailing the Arrufura in national titles.

Rob ingram will be travelling up to Saratoga sailing club to sail on Brisbane waters for the Arrow nationals hoping to beat Shorty, possibly meeting up with the cobras at same venue.

To all those club members not going away The Volvo round the world race yachts will be arriving in Melbourne around Xmas day if anyone has watched utube footage of these yachts sailing at 30 knots  in Southern ocean 200 NM. South of Tasmania they will be worth a look at.

The Altona executive is looking at boats to replace the aging rescue boats we have at club. Possibly large 18 foot RIB or a Stabiboat any input or recommendations would be welcome all a welcome to come to executive meetings to put suggestions forward.

Our social secretary Pete Foxey ably assisted by Belinda has been busy running 4 events so far in 2017

Trivia night at yacht club was well attended and won by the “catters” with Pete Robinson and your favorite RO on team how could we loose.

The ferry trip down to Portarlington was a winner and an enjoyable lunch had by all at the pub.

The horse racing at the yacht club went well with a few winners and many losers the club collecting the majority of the money on the night.

The last and most recent was the club picnic at Hanging Rock sponsored by Linderman enterprises. Santa came along and handed out presents to the good girls and boys present this was a terrific venue with views of the rock in background

The trailer sailor division held 2 events with 6 boats sailing across to St Kilda for lunch and only 4 boats going across to Williamstown the club needs more TS boats to make this more viable or needs better advertising to foster these events we have perfect venue at club for these events.

The short course 7 race series on Saturday with perfect weather was well attended with visitors from other clubs these sorts of events in afternoon with possibly 4 races back to back may be on the sailing program in future this was suggested by a few sailors who enjoyed the event. Sheik , Basir and Badril sailed in this event after 4 years in sail training and seemed to enjoy the competition may be time to step up to the big league.

The drone video footage of the yacht club taken by Shannon Wilson was terrific and will be placed on web page for all to view this will showcase the club to prospective members.

Sailing will recommence on the 6th. January 2018 with 2 aggregate races, on the 10th. February the TOB race will be held at Port Melbourne this year.
